Thirty years ago, some very determined and compassionate people decided to take a stand for Mumbai’s street dogs, who were being rounded up by municipal vans and brutally killed. Since the conception of IDA India, thousands upon thousands of dogs and cats have been given lifesaving care and a second chance.

IDA India was officially registered as a charity in 1997, shortly after its initial conception, and the Municipal Corporation gave it the facility that had been used to kill dogs to turn it into a treatment and Animal Birth Control (ABC) center soon after.

After undergoing many upgrades, including many of which are recent, the Deonar Center in Mumbai is a thriving hub with a new puppy house, admissions ward, intensive care unit, surgical suite, and outpatient department that provide vital care to animals in need. It’s also home to more than two dozen blind, senior, and special-needs dogs who also have their own dedicated garden to play and lounge in.  

Last year alone, IDA India helped 31,616 animals through its four centers, including Deonar, Turbhe, New Panvel, and Lonavala, and its fleet of mobile ambulances. Animals were provided care for injuries and illnesses, thousands were brought into the outpatient department by caring residents for aid, and 8,126 dogs and 2,533 cats were spayed/neutered through IDA India’s ABC program.

This life-saving work wouldn’t be possible without support from donors, our dedicated staff, including a renowned veterinarian, and volunteers. Every day, hundreds of animals are fed and cared for, even through scorching temperatures and monsoons. Watching so many incredible transformations of animals in need has made the work all the more meaningful.
