Miracle of Animals

The Animalparenting Connection

IDA invites you to read this column by guest blogger Dr. Joann Marie Donahoe, DVM, veterinarian, behaviorist, trainer, and author of the downloadable audiobook, “Parenting Your K-9 Angel.”

Animalparenting-square-logoIn spite of veterinary medical advances, there still remains an epidemic that does not require advanced technology. The leading cause of death and abandonment of animals is behavioral issues. According to The Institute of Insurance Studies, $479 million was paid in dog bite claims in 2012 and $413 million in 2010. These figures do not include the number of attacks left unreported. If this behavioral epidemic is not effectively addressed, these numbers will continue to increase.

Due to this behavioral epidemic, there are over 5 million dog bites per year, over 50% on children and seniors. Unlike most epidemics, this one can be resolved with information, education, and empowerment of animal guardians or “animal parents.” Since the public is continually bombarded with conflicting messages in the media and on the Internet, the resolution relies on experienced professionals and committed clients.

In my experience, all animals respond to the same four foundational cornerstones of Love, Trust, Respect, and a Commitment to Consistency without tricks, treats, drugs, or external controls. When you train the way nature does, the behavioral dynamics are profoundly effective with a 98% success rate.

Remember that companion animals are profoundly intelligent, 100% empathic, and multi-sensory regardless of their species, age, or sex. Their only agenda is to give love, receive love, and get more attention. Since negative attention is still attention, they think you want them to continue the behavior in question. Just imagine how many mixed messages we are unconsciously sending to our beloved animal companions!

In my opinion, mixed messages breed insecurity and insecurity breeds aggression, which contributes to the current behavioral epidemic. Establishing a loving relationship with trust, respect, and consistency, is the foundation for a safe, loving animal companion. Vocal tones, attitude, tons of affection, and fair discipline, are key ingredients to having a balanced relationship with the companion animal in your life.

Animal-lovers are the most kind, caring, and dedicated people I have ever met. I invite all animal lovers to make a resolution to end this predictable, preventable, and curable epidemic by having Love, Trust, Respect, and a Commitment to Consistency, be the foundation for all species to live a healthy, happy, safe, and loving life.

Stay tuned for Parts 2, 3, and 4 of this series.

In Memoriam:
I wish to express my heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the family, friends, colleagues, and clients of Sophia Yin, DVM, who passed away on September 29. Dr. Yin recognized the enormity and gravity of the behavioral epidemic and devoted her efforts to bringing awareness to this critical issue. May her family find peace and comfort in knowing she lived her passion.
