Lies, Waste and Corruption at Ritual Sacrifice

A New York City street corner is littered with blood, carcasses and feces following Kapparot, a ritual Hasidic Jewish chicken massacre ahead of Yom Kippur done by the Hasidic Jewish Community. The disturbed practitioners of the ritual claim that the chickens who have their throats slit (while frantically cheeping and trying to get away) during the ritual are donated to feed the poor, but a video shot the morning after the ritual proves that claim is simply untrue.

The ritual goes like this: Participants pay money to the organizers for a terrified, dehydrated and sick chicken. They pray and wave the distressed animal over their heads, and return him or her to the butcher on hand for killing. The money and the chickens are alleged to go to charity. Video evidence, however, show that this is not the case. Instead, the chickens are killed in an unsanitary manner (incidentally rendering them unsafe for food donation) and then simply tossed into trash to become landfill somewhere. This is a horrific waste of animal emotions and lives and has no place in an evolved and socially aware society.

Activists are concerned about the treatment of the chickens prior to slaughter as well, noting that many suffer and die in crates after days of ill treatment on the way to the ritual. This waste of life does not have to take place; animal activists and caring people everywhere advocate using a monetary or non-animal symbol of atonement in place of the chickens for the Kapparot ritual.

Massacring animals in an attempt to cleanse one’s own sins is a ridiculous farce. The only true “sacrifice” a human can make is suicide, not the killing of innocent bystanders unrelated to one’s own actions. Note: We don’t advocate suicide-we are making a point of the insanity of killing anyone innocent, then calling the action some sort of “sacrifice” on that killer’s part.
