In what would be a major win against the fur trade, Poland's parliament has approved a ban on fur farming, but it won't be official until it goes through the Senate and gets approved by the president. Urge decision makers to ensure this law passes!

Fur-bearing animals on farms suffer short lives of intensive confinement in small, barren cages, followed by gruesome deaths via anal electrocution, gassing, or neck-breaking, or worse, before they're skinned for products no one actually needs.

Sadly, Poland is currently the largest fur producer in the European Union, which mostly farms mink, who are naturally solitary, semi-aquatic animals who love swimming. They're denied the ability to engage in any natural behaviors, which causes enough psychological stress to lead them to self-mutilate, exhibit aggression, or resort to cannibalism.

Not only has this industry continued to be exposed for insidious cruelty, but it's also environmentally destructive and poses a serious threat to human health, which was highlighted by the spread of COVID-19 and avian influenza on fur farms in recent years.

The good news is that Poland's lower house, Sejm, passed a ban on fur farming that would go into effect in 2033, offering a more than fair phase-out period and includes compensation for farmers who close before the deadline.

It now goes to the upper-house Senate, which can delay or amend it, and then needs to be approved by President Karol Nawrocki.

Jako osoba zaangażowana w kwestie dobrostanu zwierząt, z radością przyjmuję informację, że prace nad ustawą zakazującą hodowli zwierząt na futra w Polsce posuwają się naprzód. Apeluję o pełne poparcie tego projektu.

Podczas gdy branża futrzarska w Europie stale się kurczy, Polska pozostaje jednym z największych eksporterów futer na świecie, a niepokojące śledztwa ujawniają drastyczną rzeczywistość zwierząt futerkowych hodowanych i zabijanych na futra na terenie kraju.
Wrodzone okrucieństwo tego rodzaju hodowli budzi poważne zastrzeżenia etyczne, które doprowadziły do jej zakazu w 22 krajach europejskich, w tym w 16 państwach członkowskich UE.

Nie tylko systematycznie ujawnia się szkodliwy charakter tej branży, lecz także jej wpływ na środowisko oraz poważne zagrożenie dla zdrowia publicznego. W ostatnich latach uwidoczniły to ogniska COVID-19 i ptasiej grypy wykrywane na fermach futrzarskich.

Ustawa będąca obecnie przedmiotem prac położyłaby kres cierpieniu zwierząt oraz zagrożeniom stwarzanym przez fermy futerkowe, wysyłając jednocześnie jasny sygnał, że dobrostan zwierząt stanowi priorytet. Przewiduje ona również hojną fazę wygaszania działalności, w tym rekompensaty dla hodowców zamykających fermy przed wyznaczonym terminem.

Mam nadzieję, że członkowie Senatu oraz Prezydent Karol Nawrocki poprą to kluczowe rozwiązanie legislacyjne i doprowadzą do jego wejścia w życie.

As someone concerned with animal welfare, I’m thrilled to learn that legislation to ban fur in Poland is progressing, and I urge you to fully support it.
 
While the industry continues to decline in Europe, Poland remains one of the world’s largest exporters of fur, while disturbing investigations expose the horrific reality for furbearing animals raised and killed for fur in Poland.
 
The inherent cruelty of fur farming has raised ethical concerns that have led to bans in 22 European countries, including 16 EU Member States.
 
Not only has the insidious nature of this industry continued to be exposed, it’s also environmentally destructive and poses a serious threat to human health. This has been highlighted by the spread of COVID-19 and avian influenza on fur farms in recent years.
 
The bill under consideration would end the suffering and dangers posed by fur farms and send a message that animal welfare is a priority. It also offers a generous phase-out period, including compensation for farmers who close before the deadline.
 
I hope to see members of the upper house of the Senate and President Karol Nawrocki support this critical legislation and ensure it becomes law.
