A man accused of deliberately setting a kitten on fire is facing serious felony charges, with his bail set at $10,000. Join us in urging rigorous prosecution that includes jail time and a mandatory mental health assessment to prevent future cruelty.
Eric Keith Williams, 21, faces multiple felony charges including cruelty to animal companions and arson after being accused of setting a kitten on fire on July 7, 2024, in Dayton's Five Oaks neighborhood. The incident, which led to a confrontation between neighbors, was reported to Dayton Police who found the injured kitten and an empty gas can at the scene. The kitten, now named Joffrey, received lifesaving care from the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, and will soon be back under the care of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. According to the organization, he's recovering well, but the burns he suffered resulted in him losing his ears. Joffrey has since been adopted.

Subject: Torched Kitten Deserves Justice
I am writing on behalf of In Defense of Animals to advocate for the stringent prosecution of Eric Keith Williams, who faces grave felony charges including cruelty to an animal companion and arson, stemming from a deeply disturbing incident where he allegedly set a kitten on fire.
The intentional harm inflicted on this kitten is not just an act of cruelty towards a non-human animal; it is a glaring indicator of a mindset that delights in causing suffering, irrespective of the victim's species. This dangerous propensity suggests a severe threat to all vulnerable beings, including children and the elderly. The inability to always protect the most defenseless among us, such as this kitten, calls for an increased commitment to justice and compassion.
In light of these considerations, it is crucial that this case be pursued with the full force of the law, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations. I urge your office to:
- Not offer any plea deal that doesn’t include a lengthy stay in jail.
- Impose the maximum sentence allowable should Williams be found guilty.
- Require a comprehensive mental health evaluation and mandate participation in a mental health and anger management program.
- Enforce a permanent restriction on Williams from acting as a guardian to, or coming into contact with, any animals.
My community, along with national and international supporters, is deeply concerned about the outcome of this case. I trust that your actions will demonstrate a firm stance against cruelty and a commitment to safeguarding all members of our society, human and non-human alike.
Thank you for your dedicated attention to this grave matter. I am committed to monitoring this case closely and am eager to see justice served.
Sincerely,
Signed
