Three teenagers have been arrested in New York after allegedly horrifically killing and later cooking and eating a beloved community swan named Faye, taking her forlorn babies, and leaving her partner Manny to grieve in solitude. Support the district attorney's strong prosecution of this case.
At the end of May, the teenagers climbed a fence at the Manlius Swan Pond in a Syracuse suburb, where they beheaded Faye and stole four of her babies, or cygnets. They then took Faye's body back to the home of one of their relatives where she was cooked and eaten, while the teens planned to keep the cygnets.
Tips about the missing cygnets led investigators to a business in Salina where two were found. The other two were found at a residence in Syracuse, and the investigation led to the discovery of what happened to Faye.
The teens, aged 16, 17, and 18, who claimed they were hunting and thought Faye was a duck were arrested and charged with grand larceny and criminal mischief, which are both felonies, in addition to conspiracy and criminal trespass, which are both misdemeanors. Additional charges may also be brought by the Department of Environmental Conservation.
Manny, meanwhile, has been left to grieve alone in the pond. The four cygnets are being cared for by a biologist and are expected to be returned to the pond, but Manny will likely be removed at that time because he may become aggressive toward them without Faye.
