Southern California: Join an Outreach Event at the Los Angeles Reptile Super Show

Southern California: Join an Outreach Event at the Los Angeles Reptile Super Show

The Reptile Super Show is returning on Saturday, January 10, once again showcasing reptiles and amphibians for public display and sale, while disregarding concerns for animal well-being, public health, and conservation. In Defense of Animals is calling on compassionate advocates to take action by joining us for an outreach event to educate the public and expose the cruelty of the exotic animal trade.

The Reptile Super Show takes place in crowded convention spaces where snakes, lizards, tortoises, frogs, and other animals are confined to small plastic containers and cages, enduring extreme stress and neglect as they are treated as merchandise. The suffering of these animals continues beyond the show, reflecting an industry that prioritizes profit over animal welfare.

The exotic pet trade contributes to biodiversity loss, wildlife trafficking, and serious public health risks. Animals sold at expos often receive inadequate care, and many die prematurely. Buyers are rarely informed of the complex, lifelong needs of these animals or the devastating consequences of captivity.

Captivity at expos cannot replicate reptiles' natural ecosystems, and many animals sold are taken from the wild, worsening threats to vulnerable species. Those not sold often remain behind the scenes, suffering from neglect.

Additionally, vendors sometimes violate federal law by selling turtles and tortoises under four inches in length, despite the risk of salmonella transmission, particularly to children. Many people are also unaware that some tortoises can live over 100 years, reinforcing the harmful myth that reptiles are “starter pets.”

Animals are not products. They deserve respect, protection, and compassionate care. For those interested in welcoming a reptile into their lives, adoption through reputable rescues is the humane choice.

We are calling for an end to the sale of animals at expos and the cruelty they perpetuate. We will be joined by organizations such as Rescue Not Retail and the L.A. Animal Defense League, and we hope you will stand with us.

This outreach action will focus on public education and meaningful engagement. We will speak with attendees, share resources, and encourage adoption over purchasing animals. We’ll provide signs, educational flyers, local rescue lists, and kid-friendly activity books and stickers. Please bring a satchel or bag to help carry materials.

Together, we can challenge exploitation and help ensure animals are treated with the compassion and respect they deserve.
